![]() aAre you looking to have your windows professionally cleaned, but don't want to spend a lot of money? You could do it yourself, and save the money however there are several reasons that you would be better off hiring a professional. Most windows especially high windows require a ladder to clean the outside windows, and at times even the inside windows. If you don't have a ladder or aren't comfortable working on ladders it is best to leave it to the professionals. Paying to have your windows cleaned professionally in most cases will be cheaper than a trip to the emergency room, or the cost of replacing a window if you accidentally put the ladder through one of them. Unless you already own all of the tools needed to clean your windows, even the cost of just the basic tools can add up fast. Just a squeegee ($20), scrubber ($20), scrapper ($10), cleaning solution ($20), and rags ($10) will on average cost you around $80. Plus, once you gather all of the basic tools it will probably take you 2 to 3 times longer to clean your own windows than for a professional who cleans windows every day. So, unless you are comfortable on a ladder, don't mind spending your whole day cleaning your windows and have great insurance just go ahead and hire a professional. There are two times a year that when you can do just that. The price of window cleaning, just like anything else is effected by supply and demand. In the busy months which are typically April - June (Spring) and September - November (Fall) prices are higher, but during those slower times early Spring and after July 4th until the kids start to go back to school in late August prices tend to be lower. If you want to save anywhere for $50 - $200 depending on the size of your home and total number of windows these are the best times to have have your windows cleaned. Not all companies lower their prices during these slow periods, but most do. Whether it's a one man operation who needs to pay his bills or a large company who needs to keep their employees working. When selecting a company just make sure they have at minimum general liability insurance just in case they damage any of your property. A professional window cleaner should have no problem producing this documentation for you. For your own protection it's probably a good idea to make sure they have a workman's compensation policy as well, but that is up to you. If you aren't sure where to start just ask your family, friends or neighbors who they use. If that doesn't help you can always post in local groups on Facebook for recommendations. You can always read through online reviews as well until you find a company with a good reputation. If you still aren't sure ask the company to provide you with a few references. Now it's time to have those windows cleaned. If you live in Aurora, Batavia, Geneva, Saint Charles, or Elgin feel free to give us a call, and we will be happy to take care of those windows for you. Our two year old daughter really got a kick out of looking at them and moving them around in the windows. By mid July when the temperatures really started to heat up Santa and his reindeer finally decided to make a run for it right down our windows. That's what remained of the jolly old fat man and his sleigh on the left side of the window. When I attempted to pull Santa and his friends off of the window they wouldn't come off, and just smeared around on the glass making an even bigger mess. So, hears what I had to do to make my windows shine again. First, you will need a razor scraper. You can pick one up at just about any store. Even the razor won't take it all off. Once I had scraped my windows it kind of looked like someone had just smeared Jello all over my windows. Next, I had to use an all-purpose cleaner to take that remaining film off of my windows. I would've preferred to use "Goo Gone" a very light citrus based degreaser, but I used "Tough & Tender" made by Melaleuca because that is all I had on hand. I had to liberally spray down the glass, and again take my scraper to the glass and wipe it dry getting of as much film as I could each time. It took me about five times of doing this to fully remove all of the left over gunk. Once I had finally removed all of the sticky mess from my windows it was time to make them shine again. If you don't want to make your own solution a little Windex and paper towels will work just fine. If you have a scrubber and squeegee it will be a whole lot easier. The solution I used was about a gallon of water, a squirt of Dawn dish soap (this makes the squeegee move smoothly across the glass) and a splash of an additive called Glass Gleam 4 to leave that no-streak finish. If you don't have the Glass Gleam 4 though it's OK just make sure you get all the drips and edges really dry and they should look great. Now it's time for the last step. Take that Windex or homemade solution and get those window really wet. Take precautions and put down some rags on the sills and floor so any drips don't turn into stains. Now one last time take your scrapper and get any remaining film that might still be on those windows. Next take your scrubber and get those windows wet one last time and then squeegee them off and buff out and streaks or drips until those windows shine again. If you are using Windex and paper towels just spray, scrape, spray and wipe dry and you should be good to go. Now it's time for you to go clean those windows, but if you happen to live in the Batavia, Geneva, or St. Charles area feel free to give us a call and we will be happy to take care of those windows for you. |
